Season’s Greetings from Drs. Styrt, Job & team!

In this season given to tidings of comfort and joy, and as Drs. Styrt and Job & team reflect on the year that was, we’d like to ask you, our wonderful patients: What do you love about the holidays this year? Being with your loved ones? A clean slate for 2012? Opening presents by the fireplace? All the delicious food? Also, what gift are you most looking forward to getting this year?

We’d love if you shared with us all the things you love about the holidays. Stay warm, and don’t forget to stay away from those sweets!

Happy Holidays!

Ask Dr. Styrt: “I’m 28 – am I too old for braces?”

Of course not.

Not too long ago, we came across an article that reported adults getting braces has jumped 24 percent from just 15 years ago! In fact, did you know one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over the age of 21?

In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or that promotion, adults are choosing to invest—rather wisely—in orthodontics. While orthodontics are often associated with teenagers, adult orthodontics and braces at our San Diego office can achieve amazing results for adult patients. With treatments such as Invisalign, patients can have their teeth straightened less noticeably. Orthodontic treatment at Dr. Styrt's office can be successful at any age, and our dedicated staff knows that adults especially appreciate the benefits of a gorgeous smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Drs. Styrt and Job would love to have you visit for a consultation. Please give us a call to set one up!

Happy Holidays from all of us at Dr. Styrt’s office!

The myths & facts about orthodontics, from Dr. Styrt

Drs. Styrt and Job know there are quite a few myths about orthodontics (and orthodontists) floating around nowadays. But before you buy into those myths, our docs think you should get the facts! We came across a great site that helps set the record straight. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have some excellent information on the myths and facts of orthodontics. We encourage you to check them out today!

If you have any questions about orthodontics or your treatment here at Dr. Styrt's office, feel free to give us a call at (858) 458-1088!

How important is your smile? From Dr. Styrt

We hope you had a great Thanksgiving weekend! At the office of Dr. Paul Styrt, we consistently strive to provide the finest and most technologically advanced orthodontic and pediatric dental care to each person we serve. We value honesty and integrity in all that we do, and treat each person as we would want to be treated. We truly enjoy what we do — creating Spectacular Smiles!

And speaking of smiling, in a poll conducted by Glamour Magazine earlier this year, people were asked, “If you had to pick between having perfect teeth, eyesight or hair, which would you choose?”

Well, 44 percent of folks out there chose teeth! In addition, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, or AACD, conducted a study and found that 99.7 percent of those polled believed a smile is an important social asset. Respondents said straightness, whiteness, cleanliness, as well as the sincerity and sparkle of one’s smile were all important factors not only socially, but career-wise as well.

Contact our San Diego, CA office for more information. We look forward to seeing you!

Ask Dr. Styrt: “I got my braces. Now what?"

We love when patients ask us that question! Now that you’re wearing braces, it’s just as important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen as you did before before orthodontic treatment began.

Braces are known to trap food particles and make it difficult to brush or remove plaque, which is why Drs. Styrt and Job recommend that you brush and floss after every meal. We also encourage you to use a proxabrush to help with the smaller areas where your toothbrush doesn’t reach. We encourage the use of fluoride rinse as well; ask Dr. Styrt or Dr. Job for a recommendation.

When your braces are initially placed, your teeth are likely to be very sensitive. You may experience discomfort for up to 3 or 5 days, which is why we encourage you to eat soft foods during that time. Remember, the less pressure you put on your teeth, the less discomfort you will have.

You may also be thinking, “Okay, so what can I eat?” We would encourage you to avoid eating sticky, hard, crunchy or chewy snacks that can stick to your teeth.

Our team at Dr. Styrt's office will tell you it’s crucial to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets. In the event of a loose/broken wire or bracket, please call our San Diego orthodontic office immediately to schedule an appointment for repair.

Lastly, in addition to visiting Dr. Styrt's office during your orthodontic treatment for adjustments, you should visit your dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months, or as recommended by your dentist.

Ask Dr. Styrt: What's the deal with all that Halloween candy?

For parents worried about kids going overboard on candies, sugar and other sweets, Halloween is a dreaded annual event.

Drs. Styrt and Job know all those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as your braces! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! Sour and fruity candy, such as Starburst and Skittles, are the worst for your child’s teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which can ruin enamel.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Trick-or-treaters who indulge should make sure they brush and floss between teeth, around brackets and at the gum line. If damage occurs, call Dr. Styrt and our staff as soon as possible.

Hope this helps! Happy Halloween!

Unused Flexible Spending and Health Savings Funds

Greetings!

Believe it or not the 2011 year is quickly coming to an end! As the calendar winds down to 2012, we know many of our valued patients will be anxiously eyeing their Flexible Spending or Health Savings Account balances---trying hard not to squander any of the hard-earned dollars socked away for medical and dental expenses for the past year. We are all too painfully aware of the “use it or lose it” nature of these plans. Especially given the condition of our economy over the past months, we understand that now, more than ever, it is very important to use these pre-tax funds before the year ends and they are gone.

As a courtesy to all of our patients, we wanted to take this time to remind you that if you have available funds in either your FSA or HSA account, it pays to schedule the dental and orthodontic treatment that you and your family need now. We have reserved additional time in our schedule to accommodate these requests ---simply call our office at (858)458-1088 to set up an appointment.

In addition, you can still take advantage of available funds if you currently have an active payment plan for treatment in our office. Our Financial Coordinator would be happy to adjust your current payment schedule to allow you to use your available FSA/HSA funds before they are lost.

If you have any questions regarding planning your 2012 FSA/HSA, open-enrollment for your dental insurance, or your account and treatment, please contact our office either by phone or e-mail, at request@drstyrt.com. Our team is available to help with your planning and scheduling needs.

We wish you all a successful year-end!

Sincerely,

Dr. Styrt, Dr. Job, and Team

Cold season is here, from Dr. Paul J. Styrt

Cold and flu season is here - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that a common cold usually includes sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and coughing. Symptoms can last for up to two weeks.

To promote a healthy and clean environment, Drs. Paul Styrt, Allen Job and our entire staff give a great deal of attention to sanitation and sterilization in our San Diego office at all times, as well as following all requirements for sterilizing instruments and work surfaces. For the protection of other patients and our staff at Dr. Paul J. Styrt, we always ask that patients reschedule their appointments if they have any type of cold or illness that can infect others.

And remember to constantly wash your hands and avoid contact with those who are ill! Stay Healthy!

We are offering complimentary orthodontic evaluations this month!

October is here. The leaves are beginning to fall, the weather is getting a bit chilly here in San Diego, the days are getting shorter and all that Halloween candy is beginning to make its rounds. For Drs. Paul Styrt and Allen Job, as well as for our entire staff, October is known as both National Dental Hygiene Month and National Orthodontic Health Month!

So, you can probably imagine how busy we are in trying to spread the word on proper oral care! In fact, we are offering complimentary orthodontic evaluations this month!

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have created a helpful website that provides important information on protecting your braces, including tips for trick-or-treaters, braces-friendly Halloween recipes, facts about braces and treats you should avoid while wearing braces.

Also, here are a few tips to help you build good oral hygiene habits this month:

* Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two to three minutes. Make sure to get the outer and inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of each tooth.

* Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth. Help children learn healthy flossing habits so when they’re capable, they know how to do it properly.

* Visit Dr. Styrt's office on a regular basis. Children should start seeing a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth.

* Ask us what toothpaste family members should use. Remember that not all toothpaste is appropriate for all ages.

* Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and veggies. Avoid sugary foods and eat a high fiber diet of fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots to help prevent tooth decay.

If you have any question, we invite you to ask us on Facebook or give us a call at (858) 458-1088.

Ask Dr. Styrt: “Where can I get more info about braces?”

Great question! Besides Dr. Styrt’s website, which provides you with a plethora of information about all things braces and Invisalign, we would like to point you to a helpful website: Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, have provided lots of important information about everything braces, including myths and facts of orthodontics, tips for a better orthodontic experience and cool webisodes about orthodontics.

We encourage you to check out AAO today and feel free to contact us if you have any questions here on our blog or on our Facebook page.

Hope this helps,

September is National Gum Care Month!

At the office of Dr. Paul Styrt, we know that gingivitis, which is the early stage of periodontal disease, can be difficult to recognize if you’re not a trained dentist. Many people don’t recognize the warning signs – bleeding and swollen gums – as a precursor to periodontal disease, also known as gum disease. While many folks in the dental field believe periodontal disease is an adult problem, studies indicate that gingivitis (the first stage of periodontal disease) is nearly a universal problem among children and adolescents.

This month, a national campaign is under way to raise awareness about gum health and periodontal disease, and we wanted to help do our part to spread the word! Drs. Styrt, Job and our team will tell you early recognition and taking action are the most important steps to health gums, and ultimately a health body, too! Studies are published every year linking oral health, including the gums, to the health of other areas of the body, such as your child’s heart. One of the most important steps to improving the care of your child’s gums is recognizing the warning signs for gum disease.

Our staff knows these can include:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent halitosis, or bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

If you happen to notice any of these signs with your child, please schedule an appointment at our convenient office by calling us as soon as possible. We can take proactive steps to prevent gingivitis and gum disease, while showing you and your child how to improve gum care in your daily oral hygiene habits.

"My son is turning 1 - when should we visit Dr. Styrt's office?"

Great question! The short answer is, "First visit by first birthday."

Dr. Paul Styrt and our staff know that cavities know no age boundaries, and that is why we recommend a visit to our office at age one. Coincidentally, that happens to be the opinion of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association.

Research has shown that cavities are increasing in preschool-aged children, and that more than one in four kids has had at least one cavity by the time they're four years old. In fact, many children get cavities as early as age two.

The appointment also covers topics such as the importance of baby teeth, nutrition, development and overall concerns you may have with your child. We believe that a child's first visit with Dr. Styrt or Dr. Allen Job should be enjoyable and positive, and we want you to feel at ease from the moment your family arrives at our convenient San Diego office.

Have you scheduled an appointment for your child? We hope to see you soon!

Gum disease and your child

At the office of Dr. Paul Styrt, we’ll tell you it’s easy to tell when you have a cavity; but unfortunately, gum disease can exist in your child’s mouth without you even knowing. In fact, your child can have the beginning stages of gum disease without noticing any pain or discomfort. Since gum disease can be undetectable, it’s important to watch for warning signs in order to prevent the disease from worsening!

Signs to watch for:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent halitosis, or bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

If your child is having these symptoms, schedule an appointment right away by calling our San Diego office and our team. We can diagnose the problem and begin treatment to save your teeth and give your child back a healthy mouth!

We look forward to seeing you!

Smile wide! It's National Smile Week!

It’s National Smile Week, and a GREAT time to remind our patients at the office of Dr. Paul Styrt to practice good oral hygiene to keep those teeth shining during your orthodontic treatment!

This includes brushing and flossing regularly, avoiding foods that can stain your teeth such as tea and coffee and visiting your general dentist in San Diego or surrounding communities as recommended.

And remember to smile at people you come across throughout the week, whether you know them or not. Smiles are contagious, and are a good thing to give and to get. In addition, smiling can actually help you live longer, according to a recent study! We hope you’re all having a relaxing summer!

Dr. Styrt & team want to know: What’s on your mind?

As the summer progresses, our team at the office of Dr. Paul Styrt strive to continue writing about important topics related to orthodontics and your treatment at our San Diego office.

To help us continue doing that through the course of the summer, Dr. Styrt and team would like to ask you, our readers: what’s on your mind? What would you like to know about the always-changing and exciting field of orthodontics? What would you like us to focus on our blog in the summer months? Perhaps there’s something you’ve wanted to ask Dr. Styrt for a while? Let us know by posting here or on our Facebook page!

Monday, July 18, 2011

Ask Dr. Styrt: When should my child come in for a consultation?

What a great question! Many parents naturally assume they must wait until their child has all of his or her permanent teeth to visit our San Diego office for a consultation, only to discover treatment would have been much easier if started earlier. Did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic check-up no later than age seven?

That’s right—seven.

Ok, so what’s so great about age seven, you ask? Enough permanent teeth have arrived for us to make a determination about whether any problems are present. The first molars have come in, providing an opportunity to check for malocclusion, or what we call “bad bite.” Also, the incisors have begun to come in, and problems such as crowding, deep bites and open bites can be detected.

Orthodontic evaluation at an early age provides one of two positive outcomes: For some, early identification or problems will lead to easier or shorter orthodontic treatment in the future. For others, a healthy prognosis will provide immediate peace of mind.

Early evaluation, of course, may signal a need for early treatment. For some children, early treatment can prevent physical and emotional trauma. Aside from spurring on years of harmful teasing, misaligned teeth are also prone to injury and are detrimental to good oral hygiene. So, if your child is nearing his or her seventh birthday, give us a call to schedule an appointment.

5 Reasons to visit our office for a consultation this summer

With the country still mired in a recession, many parents in San Diego are putting off visiting the orthodontist for a consultation. Dr. Styrt and our team hear all the reasons - vacations, chores, emergencies, et cetera. Today, Dr. Styrt and our staff thought we'd give our prospective patients five reasons to visit our office this summer for an orthodontic consultation.

1. Summer is a great time to schedule the longer appointments often times needed to begin Orthodontic treatment. That way, patients will need to miss class a very limited number of times throughout treatment, if at all.

2. A break from school is also a great time to allow yourself to get used to new braces and appliances. That way, you can be ready to show off your new smile accessories on the very first day back without any awkwardness or discomfort.

3. Summer is a great time to join our exciting new patient programs and to experience our fun patient appreciation programs!

4. These next few months are an ideal time to take advantage of our treatment fees, which have been kept at the 2008 rate, but only until next year!

5. The second half of the calendar year is the ideal time to take advantage of any Flexible Spending or Health Savings funds you may have for the current year. In addition, scheduling an Orthodontic evaluation during the summer will give you enough time to plan ahead for any treatment needs for next year, and to plan for open enrollment in October/November for any such plans for next year.

And here's another reason to visit us: did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven? Give us a call at 858-458-1088 to schedule a consultation!

Smile! June marks National Smile Month!

It's June already! Where does the time go?

Dr. Paul Styrt and our team are excited to tell you June marks National Smile Month, a great time to remind our patients to brush, floss, practice good nutrition at home (and over the summer) to avoid cavities and gum disease, among other dental health issues.

After all, there's more and more evidence that suggests folks with gum disease are more at risk for serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

Here are a few easy steps you can improve your oral health at home:

* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
* Floss everyday to clean between your teeth and braces
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during orthodontic treatment.
* Visit your general dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).

If you have questions about any of the tips here, we encourage you to give us a call at our San Diego office at (858) 458-1088! We hope you have a relaxing weekend!

Honoring our veterans and heroes this Memorial Day weekend

Memorial Day weekend is a time Americans remember all those who bravely gave their lives for our country. It’s also the unofficial start of summer, and for many kids, getting out of town for three days with parents after being in school all these months is sure to be sweet, sweet relief.

At the orthodontic office of Dr. Paul Styrt, we know Memorial Day weekend is ripe for travel. After all, it’s unofficially the start of summer and time for a season full of vacations, adventures and great memories with parents or friends. What are you up to this Memorial Day weekend? What will you be doing on your day off from school or work?

Whether you are headed to a barbeque, a camping trip, or just having fun in the San Diego sun this weekend, we’d like to hear all about it! Enjoy the holiday!

Ask Dr. Styrt: When should my child come in for a consultation?

Great question! Our staff will tell you that braces were originally considered to be best appropriate for teens. But these days, kids as old as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment. Because preadolescent kids are typically not self-conscious, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists suggest it could be a good idea to start early.

Experts, however, say it depends on the treatment required. Some children who get braces at an early age end up in a second phase of treatment, and end up having braces well into their teenage years despite starting young.

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages nine and 14, and the folks at AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age seven for Dr. Paul Styrt to assess what the best age for treatment is.

Hope this helps! Give us a call if you have any questions about your child’s orthodontic treatment at Kim Orthodontics! We hope you have a WONDERFUL rest of the weekend!

Dr. Styrt at the 111th AAO Annual Session

Patients at Dr. Styrt's orthodontic office can feel confident they are receiving the best in orthodontic health care. Dr. Styrt’s goal is to provide the most up-to-date technology and techniques using the best equipment possible. He is devoted to continuing education and furthers his learning through reading, attending conferences and continuing education courses. One of those conferences includes the 2011 AAO Annual Session in Chicago, where Dr. Styrt will head this weekend.

The AAO Annual Session is an always-educational event that is also one of the largest orthodontic conventions in the world. It’s also a time for Dr. Styrt to consult with dental experts and orthodontists from around the country and stay up-to-date on all the latest technologies and orthodontic treatment options available. This, of course, allows Dr. Styrt and our team to give you, our phenomenal patients, the best treatment experience possible.

Now that I have braces, what can I eat?

You just got braces and Dr. Styrt has informed you that over the next several months you will want to avoid eating anything sticky, hard, crunchy, or chewy. What does this leave for you to eat? Lettuce? Nothing?

Luckily, there was someone else wondering the same thing when she first got braces! Brenda Waterman, 13, decided she was going to find a way to have her cake and eat it too, so she created a variety of “braces-friendly” recipes that allow you to enjoy your favorite treats without interfering with your orthodontic care! Her cookbook, “The Braces Cookbook: Recipes you (and your Orthodontist) will Love,” gives patients a variety of delicious recipes, safe to eat with braces; plus additional tips and advice for packing lunches, what to eat at parties, and braces-friendly restaurant dishes! There’s even a section with tips for dealing with the soreness that can occur when your braces or appliance are adjusted. Enjoy the foods you love – even with braces!

Here is a delicious, sneak peek recipe from “The Braces Cookbook:”

Wonderful Waffles

Forget the recipe that came with your waffle iron – this recipe will redefine fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The secret to delicious waffles is letting the batter "sit" for five minutes before pouring into the waffle iron. Top cooked waffles with syrup, jam, fresh fruit or even whip cream. Makes about 5 servings!

Preheat your waffle iron according to the directions. You may want to lightly spray it with vegetable oil before heating.

• 3 cups flour
• 2 Tbl + 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 Tbl sugar
• 4 cups milk
• 4 eggs
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil

In a large bowl, whisk (or use electric mixer on low) together all ingredients. Let batter sit for about five minutes to activate the baking powder.

When waffle iron is ready, pour about 1/3 cup of batter onto each of the four squares (experiment with your iron – you don't want the batter overflowing). Gently close the cover and set your timer as the manufacturer suggests. Do not lift the cover while they bake. When done, carefully lift one edge with a flat spatula and pull the waffle away from the iron. Keep waffles warm on a plate under a clean dishtowel while the others bake.

Enjoy!

Ask Dr. Styrt: What can Invisalign® do for my oral health?

When considering treatment options, patients often ask us how Invisalign treatment is so different than traditional braces. Well, there are more reasons to smile about Invisalign with the practice of Dr. Paul J. Styrt than you may know. Invisalign is a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, and besides straightening your teeth, can improve your oral health.

Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.
Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque and even gum disease.
Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign, just ask Dr. Styrt the next time you’re in for an appointment. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page! You can also read this article for more information on Invisalign and your oral health.

Ask Dr. Styrt: “I’m 26 – am I too old for braces?”

Of course not.

Recently, we came across an article that reported adults getting braces has jumped 24 percent from just 15 years ago!

Do you know where your mouth guard is?

Wouldn’t you believe it, it’s already springtime! The spring months, however, bring an increase in outdoor activities and a greater chance of kids damaging their precious mouths and pearly whites. If you play sports, it’s important that you consult Dr. Paul Styrt for special precautions, such as wearing a mouth guard. A protective mouth guard is advised for playing spring sports such as baseball, soccer, lacrosse and others. Be sure, however, to avoid mouth guards that custom form to your teeth as these will resist any tooth movements we are trying to achieve.

In case of any accident involving the face, check your mouth and the appliances immediately. If teeth are loosened or the appliances damaged, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Styrt. And don’t forget to ask us—Dr. Styrt will provide a mouth guard for any patient in active treatment.

Only by using a mouth guard and other forms of facial protection can kids with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries. Please give us a call if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment with Dr. Styrt.

Presidents' Day Fun Facts!

Today marks Presidents’ Day, a day known for celebrating both George Washington’s and Abraham Lincoln’s combined February birthdays. Presidents’ Day was created in 1971, when President Richard Nixon combined the birthdays of two of our most well-known presidents into one single federal holiday. Presidents’ Day also marks a hard-earned day off from work and school for a lot of our patients at Dr. Styrt's office.

Here are a few fun facts about our nation’s presidents we thought you might enjoy:

*Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, supposedly carried letters, bills and notes in his tall stovepipe hat.

*George Washington is the first president to be featured on a postage stamp.

*Ronald Reagan, our 40th president, broke the so-called “20-year curse,” in which every president elected in a year ending in 0 died in office.

*Harry S. Truman was the first president to have his Inauguration and speeches televised.

*Not only was James A. Garfield the first president to be ambidextrous, but it was said he could write a sentence in Latin with one hand and write it in Greek with the other hand.

*Fourteen presidents served as vice presidents: J. Adams, Jefferson, Van Buren, Tyler, Fillmore, A. Johnson, Arthur, T. Roosevelt, Coolidge, Truman, Nixon, L. Johnson, Ford, and George H.W. Bush.

*Abraham Lincoln was the tallest of the U.S. presidents measuring 6’ 4” tall.

*Virginia is the birthplace of more United States presidents than any other state, followed by Ohio and Massachusetts.

At Dr. Styrt's office, February Marks National Children's Dental Health Month

Each February for the past 61 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.

For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.

If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Drs. Job and Styrt are both available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited our San Diego office lately? Give us a call and schedule an appointment!

Ask Dr. Styrt: Which foods should I avoid while wearing braces?

Thanks for your question. For the first day or so in your new braces, stick to soft foods. Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.

Foods you'll definitely want to avoid during your treatment include:

* Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
* Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
* Sticky foods: caramels, gum
* Hard foods: nuts, candy
* Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
* Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

For some great and braces-friendly recipes, check out the Braces Cookbook or ask Dr. Styrt or one of our staff members.

More than just a day off from school

Today, our country celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was a thinker, leader and civil rights champion. In the 1950s and ’60s, Dr. King recognized the need to bring about social justice, and worked tirelessly to instill tolerance in our nation, strengthen America’s communities and move the nation forward.

Today and this past weekend, thousands of people of all ages and races in San Diego and across the California spent their time building, giving and renovating our communities to help celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend. Do you have the day off on Monday? If so, what do you plan to do to help your local community?

We’d love to know about your activities and events this MLK Jr. Day. If you have any video or pictures you’d like to share, please pass them along! If you’re not sure how, give us a call!

Dr. Paul Styrt and our entire team are proud of all our patients, families and colleagues who continue to make a difference in the San Diego community!
