More happy patients of ours!

Dr. Paul Styrt and Dr. Allen Job, serving San Diego, La Jolla and surrounding areas, have been receiving some great patient reviews lately! Check out what our current patients are saying about our office!

"I enjoy your friendly, yet highly professional staff who have created a fun and enjoyable environment for my daughter. She will have fond memories of her orthodontic experience, which hopefully she will pass on to her children." ~ Cindy M.

"Paul Styrt is an excellent orthodontist. He repaired the work that was not so well done by another orthodontist....for my own smile. I intend to use him also for my own daughter when the time comes ... He's also a master at working in your mouth. The man nestles your head in his work area as though he's a master jeweler adjusting an exquisite timepiece ... my bite has never been better." ~ Caroline B.

"Dozens and dozens of my children's friends have or have had braces from Dr. Styrt. The comments from both my kids, other kids and all of the parents during and after treatment are extremely positive regarding the staff, office and their resulting perfect smiles. Dr. Styrt and his team were very caring, giving us individual and personalized care. He was attentive and he and his staff listened to concerns or questions and addressed them professionally. Dr. Styrt saw my children at every visit and gave me an update on their treatment each visit ... We found them VERY patient oriented and it shows throughout their entire office, starting with the complimentary hot coffee and designer teas, snacks, warm scented hand cremes. My kids want to run down the hall to get to their video game room and books and magazines. We have found them to be so much more accommodating than any other doctor we have ever been to in La Jolla!" ~ Eileen K.

Staying connected with Dr. Styrt

At the office of Dr. Styrt, we embrace technology, whether it’s through the innovative dental and orthodontic treatments we offer, our high-tech web site on Facebook. As you can probably tell, we love connecting with our patients online, whether it’s by sharing news on our blog or communicating ideas on our Facebook fan page. For social media to work, we understand that conversation is vital, and that’s why we invite you to join in and tell us what’s on your mind. Although social networks are hugely popular these days, we know they’re unpredictable and ever-changing.

While Dr. Styrt and our team take a little time to research how to best use social media, we thought we’d ask you, our loyal patients: How would you like us to use our social networks? What would you like us to share on our blog? Please post your thoughts or give us a call!

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Happy Thanksgiving from Dr. Styrt and team!

With the busyness of the holiday season right around the corner, Drs. Styrt and Job and our entire staff wanted to stop for a moment to say how thankful we are to have you in our dental family. We realize that our practice here in San Diego thrives because of great patients like you. We are the lucky ones because we not only help keep you and your smile healthy, but we also have the pleasure of knowing you and your loved ones.

Ask Dr. Styrt: Can germs really live on my toothbrush?

Great question- thank you! Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. Paul Styrt will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

We hope these tips help! Feel free to call us if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook. Have a great and relaxing weekend, everyone!

National Young Reader's Week!

This week marks National Young Reader's Week, and during this time, Dr. Paul Styrt will tell you it’s more important than ever to remind your child to read on a regular basis. After all, reading helps kids develop the mind, expands a child’s knowledge base, activates his or her flow of ideas and boosts their confidence. Plus, reading is fun!

Tell us: is your child reading a book this fall? If so, what's on his or her reading list?

If you're out of ideas for great fall reads, we encourage you to ask Dr. Styrt or our staff for suggestions, and our staff will provide a few great titles. You may also ask a local librarian here in San Diego for some suggestions or check out various fall books for kids and teens that we found this week, courtesy of Barnes & Noble.

Lastly, Dr. Styrt and our entire staff would like to say THANK YOU to our veterans, and those currently fighting for our country at home and abroad! Happy Veteran's Day!

Ask Dr. Styrt: What's the deal with all that Halloween candy?

For parents worried about kids going overboard on candies, sugar and other sweets, Halloween is a dreaded annual event.

Drs. Styrt and Job know all those sweet, sour and sticky candies may taste great, but these treats are known to damage teeth, as well as your braces! Did you know sour candies can be acidic to your teeth, and actually wear down the enamel that protects them? This can cause tooth decay and cavities! Sour and fruity candy, such as Starburst and Skittles, are the worst for your child’s teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which can ruin enamel.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your-mouth foods. Trick-or-treaters who indulge should make sure they brush and floss between teeth, around brackets and at the gum line. If damage occurs, call Dr. Styrt and our staff as soon as possible.

Hope this helps! Happy Halloween!

Straight talk with Dr. Styrt

We always get why we work so tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s great to have a smile full of evenly-aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at our San Diego office can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque, the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean! If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call at (858) 458-1088 to set up a free orthodontic consultation. Dr. Paul Styrt can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

We consistently strive to provide the finest and most technologically advanced orthodontic and pediatric dental care to each person we serve. We value honesty and integrity in all that we do, and treat each person as we would want to be treated. We truly enjoy what we do — creating Spectacular Smiles!

Busy month at Dr. Styrt's office!

Ah, October is here. The leaves are beginning to fall, the weather is getting a bit chilly here in San Diego, the days are getting shorter and all that Halloween candy is beginning to make its rounds. For Drs. Paul Styrt and Allen Job, as well as for our entire staff, October is known as both National Dental Hygiene Month and National Orthodontic Health Month!

So, you can probably imagine how busy we are in trying to spread the word on proper oral care!

Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have created a helpful website that provides important information on protecting your braces, including tips for trick-or-treaters, braces-friendly Halloween recipes, facts about braces and treats you should avoid while wearing braces.

Also, here are a few tips to help you build good oral hygiene habits this month:

* Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two to three minutes. Make sure to get the outer and inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces of each tooth.

* Floss once a day to remove plaque from between teeth. Help children learn healthy flossing habits so when they’re capable, they know how to do it properly.

* Visit Dr. Styrt's office on a regular basis. Children should start seeing a dentist within six months of getting their first tooth.

* Ask us what toothpaste family members should use. Remember that not all toothpaste is appropriate for all ages.

* Eat a healthy diet, rich in fruit and veggies. Avoid sugary foods and eat a high fiber diet of fruits and veggies such as apples and carrots to help prevent tooth decay.

If you have any question, we invite you to ask us on Facebook or give us a call at (858) 458-1088.

"My son is turning one. When should I bring him in for a visit with Dr. Styrt?"

Great question! The short answer is, "First visit by first birthday."

Dr. Paul Styrt and our staff know that cavities know no age boundaries, and that is why we recommend a visit to our office at age one. Coincidentally, that happens to be the opinion of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Dental Association.

Research has shown that cavities are increasing in preschool-aged children, and that more than one in four kids has had at least one cavity by the time they're four years old. In fact, many children get cavities as early as age two.

The appointment also covers topics such as the importance of baby teeth, nutrition, development and overall concerns you may have with your child. We believe that a child's first visit with Dr. Styrt or Dr. Allen Job should be enjoyable and positive, and we want you to feel at ease from the moment your family arrives at our convenient San Diego office.

Have you scheduled an appointment for your child? We hope to see you soon!

This week, however, we thought we’d step back and ask you, our wonderful patients and readers: what’s on your mind? What would you like to know about the always-changing field of orthodontics? What would you like us to focus on our blog in the coming months? Perhaps there’s something you’ve wanted to ask us for a while now? Let us know by posting here or on our interactive Facebook fan page!

So, take it away and we’ll try to answer any questions you may have! Happy Monday!

Dr. Paul Styrt, reminding you September is National Gum Care Month!

At the office of Dr. Paul Styrt, we know that gingivitis - the early stage of periodontal disease - can be difficult to recognize. Many people don't recognize the warning signs - bleeding and swollen gums, as a precursor to gum disease. This month, a national campaign is under way to raise awareness about gum health and periodontal disease, and we wanted to help do our part to spread the word!

Dr. Paul Styrt and Dr. Allen Job will tell you early recognition and action are the most important steps to health gums, and ultimately a health body, too! Studies are published every year linking oral health, including the gums, to the health of other areas of the body, such as your heart. One of the most important steps to improving the care of your gums is recognizing the warning signs for gum disease.

Drs. Styrt and Job know these can include:

• Gums that appear red or swollen
• Gums that feel tender
• Gums that bleed easily (during brushing or flossing)
• Gums that recede or pull away from the teeth
• Persistent halitosis, or bad breath
• Loose teeth
• Any change in the way teeth come together in the biting position

If you happen to notice any of these signs, please schedule an appointment at our convenient San Diego office by calling (858) 458-1088 as soon as possible. Our doctors can take proactive steps to prevent gingivitis and gum disease, while showing you how to improve gum care in your daily oral hygiene habits.

We hope you're having a wonderful and relaxing Labor Day weekend!

This fall, don't forget those mouth guards!

With summer here for just three more full weeks, it's a good time for Dr. Paul Styrt and Dr. Allen Job to remind our patients (especially you athletes out there) to take care of both your mouth and appliances while participating in contact sports (and non-contact sports) these coming fall months. Let's face it, this is a busy time of year sports-wise, whether you're playing soccer in the park or preparing for high school football.

Drs. Styrt and Job want you to know that only by using a mouth guard can athletes with and without braces avoid serious sports injuries this fall. So, the next time you're in for a visit at our convenient San Diego office, we encourage you to ask one of our staff members for a mouth guard, and we will happily provide one!

See you soon!

Three foods that can help your child avoid gum disease

Gum disease, known also as periodontal disease, is far more common in American kids than you may think. Year after year, new studies begin to link the effect gum disease can have on your heart, and today, Dr. Paul Styrt and our staff thought we'd help spread the word! One of the simplest steps to achieving healthier gums can be your diet. We recently found a great article from EatingWell, outlining several options for healthier gums. Included among the suggestions were:

*Raisins

*Green Tea

*Whole Grains (barley, brown rice; buckwheat; oatmeal, popcorn, whole-wheat bread, pasta or crackers)

In addition to these foods being gum-friendly, they happen to be healthy foods in general, and a great option to begin integrating into your child's diet this fall.

We encourage you to read the rest of the article! Have a great rest of the weekend!

Dr. Paul Styrt and team, helping you and your child prepare for kindergarten

With the hot and sultry Dog Days of Summer slowly coming to an end soon, it's time for you and your child to start thinking about school. August is Get Ready for Kindergarten Month for the two million kids who will be entering kindergarten come September.

Dr. Paul Styrt and our staff suggest getting involved in storytime by reading your child books about kindergarten, such as The Night Before Kindergarten or First Day Jitters.

Parenting Magazine also suggests that moms and dads take their child for a walk by their or perhaps taking him or her inside for a quick tour to get them familiarized with the concept of kindergarten. Take a walk around the classroom or peek in the windows and talk about what will be going on once school starts. Also, think about adjusting your child's sleep schedule gradually to the school’s schedule.

At home, make learning fun for your child by teach him or her the names of colors, or shapes and taking them on interesting trips around San Diego and surrounding areas—to the library or grocery store, or to a museum or the beach—and talk with him or her about what they see and think.

Finally, make sure your little one visits Simply Spectacular Smiles before the first day of school. No one wants for your child to have to leave school because of a toothache! Please give us a call at (858) 458-1088 to schedule an appointment!

We hope both you and your child have a happy and stress-free rest of August!

5 reasons to visit Dr. Styrt for a consultation this summer

With the U.S. still in a recession, many folks in San Diego are putting off visiting the orthodontist for a consultation. We hear all the reasons - vacations, chores, emergencies, et cetera. Today, Dr. Styrt and our staff thought we'd give our prospective patients five reasons to visit our office this summer for an orthodontic consultation.

1. Summer is a great time to schedule the longer appointments often times needed to begin Orthodontic treatment. That way, patients will need to miss class a very limited number of times throughout treatment, if at all.

2. A break from school is also a great time to allow yourself to get used to new braces and appliances. That way, you can be ready to show off your new smile accessories on the very first day back without any awkwardness or discomfort.

3. Summer is a great time to join our exciting new patient programs and to experience our fun patient appreciation programs!

4. These next few months are an ideal time to take advantage of our treatment fees, which have been kept at the 2008 rate, but only until next year!

5. The second half of the calendar year is the ideal time to take advantage of any Flexible Spending or Health Savings funds you may have for the current year. In addition, scheduling an Orthodontic evaluation during the summer will give you enough time to plan ahead for any treatment needs for next year, and to plan for open enrollment in October/November for any such plans for next year.

And here's another reason to visit us: did you know the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive an orthodontic consultation as early as age seven? Give us a call at 858-458-1088 to schedule a consultation! Happy Monday!

Oral health Q&A with Dr. Styrt!

It may seem crazy, but there are so many rumors out there about what’s good for your teeth, what’s bad for your teeth, what will make your teeth crooked, what will discolor your teeth, and so on. Below are are answers to some of the most frequent questions Dr. Styrt and our staff always hear from patients. We hope you find this informational! Happy Monday!

Q: Which foods and drinks are actually healthy for my teeth?

A: Fruits and vegetables are good for anyone’s teeth. Milk is especially good for growing children’s teeth, and water and natural fruit juices are healthy drink choices as well.

Q: Can fingernail biting cause damage to my teeth? What about lip biting or biting the ends of pencils?

Yes…it can cause chipping and fractures of the enamel. Lip biting can cause the teeth to move, and biting anything else (pencils, pens, etc.) can cause damage to the teeth and braces.

Q: It’s said that the changing seasons can have an effect on your body and joints. Can the seasons changing also have an effect on the way my mouth feels, especially during orthodontic treatment?

Some people can get more frequent cold sores or canker sores during the Autumn/Winter months.

Q: Can hard candies or hard mints cause damage to my teeth?

Yes…especially if you bite down hard on them!

Q: Now that I’m wearing braces, I miss chewing gum. Can I still chew sugar-free gum with braces on?

We do not recommend gum chewing, as it contributes to sore jaw muscles and TMD symptoms in some patients.

Q: Is a soft toothbrush or a medium toothbrush better for my teeth and gums?

Soft always!

Q: Are spicy or acidic foods bad for my teeth?

Acidic foods can be harmful to the enamel of our teeth if they aren’t brushed off very soon after eating them.

Q: If I play sports and use a mouth guard can constantly biting down on the hard rubber eventually cause my teeth to shift and become crooked?

It could, but only if done repeatedly and for long periods of time. However, the benefit of wearing a mouth guard will out-weigh any negatives!

Q: If my wisdom teeth came in straight, do I still need to get them removed?

Not necessarily. If the third molars erupt into occlusion and can be maintained and kept clean, we normally recommend that they be kept. Unfortunately, this is only the case in less than 10% of all Americans!

Patient question for Dr. Styrt: How, exactly, does Invisalign work? [Video]

Have you ever thought about Invisalign treatment and how it manages to straighten teeth without using braces at all? The Invisalign system is a state-of-the-art system of clear, removable aligners that we at Simply Spectacular Smiles proudly offer at our convenient San Diego location. Dr. Paul Styrt offers Invisalign for teens and adults, and, being a 2008 Invisalign Premier Provider, is among the top five percent of Invisalign practitioners in North America.

With Invisalign, you'll wear each set of aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week - until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Styrt has prescribed. You'll visit our office about once every 4-8 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned. Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

Please give us a call at (858) 458-1088 to learn if this revolutionary new treatment option is right for you!

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Fun facts with Dr. Styrt!

At Simply Spectacular Smiles, we know our patients love fun facts. Who doesn't? The American Association of Orthodontists, or AAO, has come up with some fun facts about orthodontics that Dr. Paul Styrt and our staff thought you might enjoy. Have a splendid weekend, everybody!

• There are nearly 4 million people in orthodontic treatment throughout the United States. Three out of four are younger than 18.

• The first mechanical treatment for correcting irregular teeth was suggested by Gaius Plinius Secundus (A.D 23-79).The American Association of Orthodontists is comprised of more than 12,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.

• The time required to complete orthodontic treatment ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

• Of the 160,000 dentists in the United States and Canada, 8,000 are practicing orthodontists.

• The cement that attaches the braces to the teeth is now made with a special fluoride-releasing substance.

• Wires activated by body heat used in today's braces originally were developed by NASA for use in the space program.

• In addition to alleviating or preventing physical health problems, orthodontics can boost self-esteem as treatment aligns teeth, jaws and lips.

• Famous orthodontic patients include: Dr. Joyce Brothers, Hale Irwin, Cher, Diana Ross, Phyllis Diller, Chelsea Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Daisy Fuentes and Brandi.

Talkin' retainers with Dr. Styrt

If you recently completed treatment at Simply Spectacular Smiles, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Drs. Styrt and Job will provide—or have provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Drs. Styrt and Job is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment at Simply Spectacular Smiles, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call!

"Hey, Dr. Styrt! How does your office 'Go Green'"?

Dr. Styrt was recently approached and asked, "Hey, doc, how does your office manage to "Go Green and stay Green"?

Great question!

Here are the ways we take steps to make our office more environmentally-friendly, as well as preserve our planet and its resources:

*We use computerized charting and scheduling

*Brand new Kodak digital imaging (no processing chemicals, very low radiation)

*No longer send monthly statements/coupon books for Orthodontic patients

*Utilize recall e-mails rather than paper postcards

*We have recently designed and disseminated to our patients reusable grocery bags and BPA-free aluminum water bottles

For more ways on how Dr. Styrt and team "Go Green," we invite you to give us a call.

Enjoy the rest of your week!

Play it safe this spring, from Simply Spectacular Smiles

With spring here, many children, teens and adults in San Diego will once again pick up the ball, bring the bat out of seasonal retirement, and lace up their cleats to hit the fields for the return of spring sports! April is National Facial Protection Month, and during this time, Drs. Styrt and Job urge our young athletes to play it safe when out on the field.

According to the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation, children, high-school athletes and adults will have more than 5,000,000 teeth knocked out in sporting events this year. That's simply not acceptable.

Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists:

1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator

We hope these tips help. Drs. Styrt and Job will tell you that protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact our team at Simply Spectacular Smiles. Stay safe and have fun!

Parsing through the myths and facts about orthodontics with Dr. Styrt

Drs. Styrt and Job know there are quite a few myths about orthodontics (and orthodontists) floating around nowadays. But before you buy into those myths, our docs think you should get the facts! We came across a great site that helps set the record straight. Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists have some excellent information on the myths and facts of orthodontics. We encourage you to check them out today!

If you have any questions about orthodontics or your treatment here at Simply Spectacular Smiles, feel free to give us a call at (858) 458-1088!

Talking cavities with Dr. Paul Styrt

Our team at Simply Spectacular Smiles read an interesting article this morning pertaining to cavities and how bacteria spreads from parents to children, and thought we'd share the news with you, our phenomenal patients and parents.

According to the MSNBC article, Streptococcus mutans, or MS, is a bacterium that can pass from person to person through the transfer of saliva, and is the main culprit. Bacteria has been known to spread through blowing on babies' foods, sharing household utensils and even kissing your little one. In fact, a 2008 pediatric dentistry study showed “strong evidence demonstrated that mothers are a primary source of MS colonization of their children; a few investigations showed other potential sources … notably fathers.”

Our staff knows tooth decay is caused by a combination of factors, including the transfer of infectious saliva, genetics, oral hygiene, and feeding practices, such as letting your baby constantly suck on a sippy cup full of juice or milk or other sugar-laden liquids.

Dr. Paul Styrt would like for you to read the article and learn a bit more about the transmission of bacteria and how it might impact your child. If you have any questions about bacteria or your treatment at Simply Spectacular Smiles, please feel free to give us a call!

Ask Drs. Styrt and Job: Am I too old for orthodontic treatment?

Of course not.

Recently, we came across an article that reported adults getting braces has jumped 24 percent from just 14 years ago! In fact, did you know one of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over the age of 21?

In an age—and society—where looks matter as much as anything, and at a time when evenly-aligned teeth might be the difference between getting a job or that promotion, adults are choosing to invest—rather wisely—in orthodontics. While orthodontics are often associated with teenagers, adult orthodontics and braces at our San Diego office can achieve amazing results for adult patients. With treatments such as Invisalign, patients can have their teeth straightened less noticeably. Orthodontic treatment at Simply Spectacular Smiles can be successful at any age, and our dedicated staff knows that adults especially appreciate the benefits of a gorgeous smile.

If you’ve been thinking about getting that perfect smile, Drs. Styrt and Job would love to have you visit for a consultation. Please give us a call to set one up!

Happy St. Patrick's Day, from Simply Spectacular Smiles!

Whether Irish or not, millions of people around the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day with parades, toasts, and "the wearing of the green." Here are some fun facts about St. Patrick's Day, from Dr. Paul Styrt and our great team. Enjoy!

• St. Patrick’s Day is observed on March 17 because that is the feast day of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. It is also a worldwide celebration of Irish culture and history.

• The name “lephrechaun” has several origins. It could be from the Irish Gaelic word “leipreachan,” which means “a kind of aqueous sprite.” Or, it could be from “leath bhrogan,” which means “shoemaker.”

• Some American towns have “Irish” names. They include: Mount Gay-Shamrock, West Virginia; Shamrock Lakes, Indiana; Shamrock, Oklahoma; Shamrock, Texas; Dublin, California and Dublin, Ohio.

• St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in America in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1737. Approximately 34 million Americans claim Irish ancestry. That’s almost nine times the population of Ireland, which has about 4.1 million people.

• Despite what you may have heard, St. Patrick never banished snakes from Ireland. In fact, no snakes exist or ever existed there. Ireland is surrounded by icy ocean waters, much too cold to allow snakes to migrate from Britain or anywhere else.

Ask Drs. Styrt and Job: When should my child come in for a visit?

At Simply Spectacular Smiles, we think a child's first visit to the dentist should be enjoyable and positive. The more you and your child know about the first visit, the better you will feel. Children are not born with a fear of the dentist, but they can fear the unknown. At Simply Spectacular Smiles, Drs. Styrt and Job and our team make a practice of using pleasant, non-frightening, simple words to describe your child's first dental visit and treatment. We want you and your child to feel at ease from the moment you walk through the door.

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, or AAPD, children should visit the dentist by their first birthday. It is important that your child's newly-erupted teeth (erupting at 6-12 months of age) receive proper dental care and benefit from proper oral hygiene habits right from the beginning. Your child's first tooth erupts between ages 6-12 months and the remainder of their 20 primary or "baby" teeth typically erupt by age 3.

If you have any questions about pediatric dentistry, or about your treatment with Drs. Job or Styrt, please visit the "Pediatric Dentistry" page on our web site, or feel free to give us a call!

Simply Spectacular Smiles, supporting National Children’s Dental Health Month

Each February for the past 60 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. For kids wearing braces, brushing and flossing can become more difficult, requiring extra time and vigilance to remove food particles that accumulate on and between the teeth and in braces. New options for braces such as Invisalign Teen, which is removable, make it easier for kids to maintain good oral health during orthodontic treatment.

If the health of your teeth is ignored during treatment with braces, the results can be significantly compromised. Drs. Job and Styrt are both available and happy to explain why effective brushing and flossing is one of the most critical actions needed from patients during orthodontic treatment. Have you visited Simply Spectacular Smiles lately? Give us a call and schedule an appointment!

"I enjoy introducing our little patients to healthy oral health care through education and prevention," Dr. Job says with a smile. Ask Drs. Styrt and Job: Why is it so important to have straight teeth?

People wonder why Drs. Styrt and Job work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque—the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and they are easier to keep clean!

From the moment you walk into our beautiful state-of-the-art office, you will know you have come to the right place for premier personalized care. Many of San Diego’s dentists, their employees and their families have chosen our office for their own treatment. This is a huge compliment to our staff and we are humbled by their trust and confidence in us!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a consultation. Dr. Styrt can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.
